Mill Creek Middle School Principal Justin Sanderson

Why did you choose to become a Principal?
My mom was an English teacher, and my dad was a principal and Superintendent, and growing up I got to see how many people they affected in a positive manner.  The interactions both of them had with former colleagues and students were impactful and made me really admire the work they did.  I wanted that for myself and truly enjoy trying to inspire and coach others to be great in whatever they do.  I take pride in building relationships with my staff and students and want them to be comfortable coming to me for guidance and/or support.

What inspires you in your work as a Principal?
Middle school is the most moldable age in my opinion, and the impact we have on these students is crucial to their growth, success, and preparation for the world.  Sharing a successful moment for a student or teacher is awesome to be a part of and has a positive ripple effect throughout the building.  I am an eternal optimist and try to spread that sentiment around my building.  I truly believe adult behaviors drive the culture of a building and that culture starts with the principal.

How are you Elevating the Excellence in your school?
Mill Creek has a tremendous staff, and my No. 1 priority was to be highly visible and recalibrate the culture with a focus on academic ownership and positive climate.  I am a firm believer in the principal being a part of PLCs [professional learning communities teacher groups], in-house professional development, and in the classrooms engaged with students and staff.  We are building capacity in our staff to reach our highest potential and believe Mill Creek can be one of the best schools in the state.
