Mill Creek MS Earns National Technology Recognition

Mill Creek Middle School has earned national recognition for teaching students to safely use technology.

The school was awarded Common Sense School digital citizenship certification by the national nonprofit organization Common Sense.  Mill Creek MS achieved the certification through its outstanding efforts to educate students to think critically, use technology responsibly and navigate the technology safety challenges of cyberbullying, plagiarism and privacy issues.

“We applaud Mill Creek Middle School’s faculty and staff for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” Kelly Mendoza, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education, said.  “They deserve high praise for giving students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.”

Principal Matthew May praised media specialist Kim George and instructional lead strategist Ashley Kelsey for successfully engaging students in digital citizenship education.  They use Common Sense Education’s research-based resources for digital citizenship lessons including protecting personal privacy and online reputations, internet safety and managing online relationships, and media literacy and balance.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School,” he said.  “By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.”
